Default Eye Strain?

I can hardley engrave four hours with out having to stop. I usually use my optivisor, but today I switched over to my microscope hoping that would help with no better results.

What do you about eye strain?

Hi Ed

Definatley see an optometrist and get your eyes tested. That would be a very good start.

Cheers
Andrew

I find that lots of breaks, and a view to long distance helps...I have a window that looks out over the hills around my shop, and when I relax I look out over them and soon I am good to go again...

Hi Ed,

I second both Andrew and Roger. My opthomologist is also one of my engraving customers so that may help, but be sure to tell them what you do,show them photos of scrollyou cut, and make sure astigmatism correction is done as best as can be. Dr. Bush reminds me to take a 5 minute break every hour, and having a window to look out for some distance every little bit helps. It also could be the lights you are using.

I never engrave over 1 to 2 hours at a time. Not good for nerves or eyes.

it may not just be eyestrain. try playing relaxing music in the background. this can help relieve tension you may not even be aware of. stretch your legs and back, and arms too.

Ed: For what it's worth, I've had two opthamologists confirm that using a microscope is less of a strain on the eyes than using an optivisor and/or focusing close. When using a scope your eyes are focused at infinity (like looking at the horizon). I've been using a scope for 27 years and have never experienced eye strain. I would have thought that switching to the scope would have given you some relief, so getting an eye exam is definitely good advice. Please keep us posted.

i forgot to mention the importance of adjusting everything so you are seated comfortably, and in a good position. best for your back to be as vertical as possible. the less tension and strain the better when you do this work. neck tension can drive one nuts !

Ed,

My engraving caused quite a lot of eye strain, especially when i first started....it hurt me just to look at it! Ha Ha!!

All kidding aside, go get 'em checked It doesn't seem like you should get that tired in the eyes. I can work 8-10 hours a day & use the optivisor almost exclusivley.
